Something the ancient scribe has learned over the years is not to live in awe of anyone. Perhaps it’s journalism. You meet so many people. Prime ministers, celebrities, sports champions, butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers. At some stage in your life some kind of mental osmosis lets you know people are just people, no matter what their title or community standing. The human condition is a controlling thing. We’re all flawed. There’s no purpose to setting anyone up as the unassailable embodiment of goodness or greatness. They’ll always disappoint, just as we so frequently disappoint ourselves.
