4K1G Studio Tech Engineer

4K1G Radio Tech/Engineer Radio 4K1G is an integral part of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait & South Sea Islander Communities in North Queensland. Radio 4K1G is the second longest running Indigenous Radio Station in Australia with a rich history in providing up to date news, current affairs and entertainment to its listeners throughout North Queensland. Radio 4K1G’s broadcast and business operations are conducted from premises in Sturt Street in the City of Townsville. The facility houses: • A hybrid analogue/ on-air studio equipped with microphones, CD players, a computer playout system and a general-purpose computer; analogue consoles • A dedicated control/rack room incorporating broadcast chain processing, STL, SOB and monitoring equipment, analogue routers etc. The Studio Tech is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all studio and Transmitter equipment, the role requires the following: • An understanding of broadcast audio systems and techniques • A strong understanding of electronic theory and practice. • The ability to logically find faults and repair at component level • A practical understanding of IT systems • A strong and demonstrated understanding of professional audio systems and structure; • Flexible availability, including the ability to respond to emergency calls Primary responsibilities: As the Broadcast Engineer and the broader Staff, the Studio Tech is to: • Maintain all studio and broadcast systems and equipment. • Facilitate all technical aspects of Outside Broadcasts (O.B.s) • Work within a team of Technical Staff comprising IT, production, Contract Broadcast Engineer, and other techs; and the broader 4K1G FM staff, contractors and volunteers. • Locate and repair faults in studio and other audio/visual equipment used in station production and broadcast • Undertake routine maintenance • Provide general technical support • Keep the station abreast of emerging technological developments/equipment • Prepare for installation of studio and other equipment • Install or upgrade equipment • Configure/set-up equipment and systems • Advise on systems update, and opportunities to improve/increase services and increase mobility and reduce expenses • Regularly perform analysis of 4K1G’s technical needs • Propose technical development strategies • Design, develop and document technical systems • Cost and recommend purchase of equipment and provide ongoing information and advice to management regarding new and used equipment availability Key selection criteria Essential • Strong understanding of broadcast audio systems and techniques • A strong understanding of electronic theory and practice • Able to logically find faults and repair at component level • A strong & demonstrated understanding of professional audio systems and structure • Flexible availability, including ability to respond to emergency calls • Communicate effectively with others • Take responsibility for own personal development • Perform own job role effectively • Participate in quality improvement activities • Demonstrate a strong interest in emerging technologies • Excellent organisation skills • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to work in a team environment • A demonstrated ability to work with a great deal of autonomy • Understanding of broadcast and audio technologies e.g. analogue, digital, processors, STL, MMC, antennae, podcasts, live streams etc. • A practical understanding of contemporary networked IT systems Desirable • Experience working with volunteers • Experience working as a technician in a broadcast studio environment • Experience working with and maintaining Krone and 1/4" patch systems • Current accreditation to test and tag 240V single-phase equipment to AS 3760 • Familiarity digital audio signal processing concepts, devices and software • A demonstrated understanding of the 4K1G community. • Extensive knowledge of community radio desirable • Experience co-ordinating the maintenance and development of transmission chain needs, including transmitter, antennae and STL and other links • Experience with liaison/negotiation with transmission site lessors and techs etc. • Experience with the maintenance, repair and installation of analogue and digital broadcast studios • Own transport • Own hand tools Application process Radio 4K1G especially welcomes applications from people of the following groups - feel free to let us know if they apply to you: • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples • People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds • People with disability • People who identify as LGBTIQA+ • Young people (Under 26) • Women Please email officemanager@4k1g.org to request a copy of the full Position Description.
