Senior Editor, Asiavision

The ABU is seeking to recruit a high-calibre professional as Senior Editor, Asiavision.

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) is an international professional association of broadcasting organisations with 279 members in 73 countries. It services these members from the ABU Secretariat, which is hosted by the Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Multi-media, and based in RTM’s Angkasapuri compound in Kuala Lumpur. The Secretariat has 35 international staff led by senior experts in the technical, program, sports, news and copyright fields.



The Senior Editor of ABU News is in charge of the day-to-day operation of Asiavision (AVN), a 24/7 file-transfer exchange of television news items among 34 Member broadcasters from 30 countries. The Senior Editor has strong news gathering, writing and producing skills to drive the daily AVN output. The Senior Editor has effective skills in leadership and collaboration in a multi-cultural environment. The Senior Editor is proficient in designing and delivering training and development programs for broadcast journalists.



·      Provide effective editorial leadership for the AVN News Department as it manages content and develops the Asiavision News Exchange
·      Identify and implement initiatives to advance the AVN news agenda
·      Develop and build team capability through appropriate training, coaching and mentoring
·      Foster and actively engage with a wide network of contacts in AVN Member newsrooms
·      Create compelling training and development programs for AVN Members
·      Create online + social media content to connect with AVN Members and the wider public
·      Carry out other duties that may be agreed from time to time with the Director, News.



·      Experience as a broadcast journalist, working in daily, deadline-driven news and current affairs
·      Experience leading a broadcast television news team
·      Highly proficient in written and spoken English
·      Proven skills in all aspects of news gathering, writing and production
·      Proven skills in leading and developing a team
·      Proven experience in designing and delivering training programs
·      Relevant degree
·      Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a journalist and at least five in broadcast or digital journalism
·      Excellent knowledge of world news, media and trends



·      Proven ability to create and produce complex television news content
·      Proven ability to respond effectively to breaking international news
·      Highly-developed editorial judgement and knowledge of international affairs
·      Proven experience leading a broadcast television news team
·      Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver a range of training, coaching and mentoring
·      Proficiency in the computer software, social media applications and hardware required to perform the duties of the position
Personal Skills 
·      A very high standard of English, both spoken and written
·      Effective communication skills to connect with ABU Members from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and different levels of language skills
·      Ability to multi-task and prioritise work and complete tasks under tight timelines
·      Good organisational skills and proven ability to work with minimum supervision
·      Willingness to travel and work irregular hours when necessary



Tenure Status:

Contract – initial term of three years, renewable

Salary Range:

Negotiable, based on qualifications and experience
