The Australian Communications and Media Authority has accepted enforceable undertakings from Macquarie Radio Network Limited (MRN) to sell radio stations 2CH in Sydney and 4LM in Mt Isa after the merger of Fairfax and MRN was confirmed by the companies last week.

The undertakings arise from the merger of MRN and Fairfax Media Limited’s (Fairfax) radio interests, which took place on 31 March 2015.

A fascinating side issue that’s emerged from the merger of Fairfax Radio and Macquarie Radio Network is the announcement that they are going to sell off 2CH in Sydney and a number of stations in North Queensland; 4VL, Triple CCC FM, 4HI, 4ZR, 4LM, 4SB and Hot Country.

The QLD stations were collectively known as The Smart Radio Network before they were acquired by MRN from Brad Smart in 2011 for around $6 million.

Macquarie Radio Network Limited and Fairfax Media Limited have entered into a merger implementation agreement to unite their respective radio businesses.The much anticipated news has been annoucned today.

Bob Rogers' 88th birthday

Bob Rogers celebrated his 88th birthday at 2CH this morning with a bingo themed birthday cake.

Bob has been working in radio for 72 years, starting in 1942 as a panel operator for 3XY Melbourne at the age of 16.

Since then he has been a presenter on 4BH, 2UE and 2SM before moving to 2CH in 1995.

He also had a five year run in television, presenting The Bob Rogers Show on the Seven Network.

Bob continues to present mornings on 2CH, Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm.

Ray Hadley helping out other stations?

2GB morning announcer Ray Hadley had some fun today by hijacking Glenn Wheeler's 2CH breakfast show while Glenn took a wee break.

Hadley, preparing for his morning show, couldn't resist cruising into the temporarily empty studio and having his say about a quiz talkback caller.

MRN revenues 'disappointing, just short of target'

As radio reporting season continues, Macquarie Radio Network has today announced its financial results for the year ended 30 June 2014.

Operating revenues were down 2% on the prior year to $56.5 million. Total revenues and other income down 6% on prior year to $56.9 million.

Underlying EBITDA was down by 7% on the prior year to $10.5 million, with reported EBITDA (the statutory figure required by teh Stock Exchange) down by 27% on prior year to $10.4 million. The prior year included one-off net revenues totalling $3.1 million).
