ABC Gippsland wins Victorian Fire Awareness media award

ABC Gippsland won the Victorian Fire Awareness Media Award this week at a gala event in Melbourne. The Fire Awareness Awards acknowledge the great work and initiatives of individuals, groups
and organisations in reducing the incidence and impact of fire in Victoria.

The media award recognises the hard work of ABC Gippsland during last Summer in responsible reporting and increasing the awareness of fire safety and prevention in the community.

ABC Gippsland’s Regional Program Director Gerard Callinan, who accepted the award on behalf of his station, has told radioinfo:

“It is pleasing to be acknowledged for the hard work which the team at ABC Gippsland and
Victoria have carried out in broadcasting our fire emergencies and building community
awareness.

“Although the award recognises the 2006/2007 bush fire period, this award is reflective of the
past seven years and the ongoing trust of the Gippsland community.”

Callinan accepted the award from the Emergency Services Commissioner, Bruce Esplin. The
Awards were hosted by ABC’s statewide evening presenter Derek Guille.

The event is an initiative of CFA, MFB and the Department of Sustainability and Environment
(DSE) and is the only one of its kind in Victoria.
This award follows on from ABC Gippsland’s ‘Commendation’ in the Australian Safer
Communities Awards held last month.

ABC Gippsland plays a central role during fires and floods in delivering 24 hours a day
accurate and timely warnings and information to the community. They are also proud to work
with emergency agencies and assist in minimising the damage, or provide services to help
during recovery.

ABC Local Radio Victoria is the official emergency services broadcaster and has begun
working with the CFA and DSE to plan for this years fire season, which hold as much threat as
any than in the past due to the widespread drought and higher temperatures.
