ABC Radio will not cover the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

ABC Radio will not be covering the Olympics next year, due to cost pressures.

For the first time since the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the ABC will not have a live radio broadcast of the Games, with the national broadcaster citing "budget pressures and the changing broadcast environment" as reasons not to bid for the non-commercial radio rights. Channel Seven is the top level rights holder in Australia.

Senator McKenzie says the ABC must provide better coverage

Deputy leader of the Nationals and Minister for Agriculture, Bridget McKenzie, is calling on the ABC to provide quality regional services and venture into territory that does not solely rely on ratings.
 
In her private Senators Bill Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Rural and Regional Advocacy) Bill 2015, the Minister has addressed the question of what she believes the ABC’s mandate in regional Australia should be.
 

ABC and CBC announce a creative and commercial collaboration

The ABC and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) have announced a creative and commercial collaboration that will enhance the reach and impact of their content across both countries.

The two national public broadcasters have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to co-develop English-language drama, comedy, factual, children’s and podcast content to maximise the value of their public funding for audiences and will also provide further opportunities for co-financing and format sales of drama and children’s content.

Could streaming force the ABC and SBS to merge

According to The Australian today, the ABC and SBS could be forced to merge as streaming services wreck the broadcast licence revenue that the government uses to fund public broadcasting.

ABC and AFTRS 2019 Selwyn Speight Scholarship winner

Sudanese refugee Natal Jimma has been announced as this year’s recipient of the AFTRS/ABC Selwyn Speight Diversity Scholarship.
 
The scholarship is made available through a $20,000 bequest from the late, distinguished ABC journalist Selwyn Speight.
 
Currently completing AFTRS 2019 Graduate Diploma in Radio, Natal’s interest in radio began in Sudan and includes over five years’ experience at university and community radio stations in Australia.
 

River Lives, a special ABC Radio focus on the Murray-Darling
