Applications open for $100,000 Heywire Youth Innovation Grants

Regional communities are being encouraged to apply for funding from the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) to kick start projects developed at the 2020 ABC Heywire Regional Youth Summit, held in Canberra earlier in the year.
More than 50 young people from across Australia came together at the summit to generate ideas aimed at making regional Australia an even better place to live for younger Australians.

ABC Grandstand kicks on for sports lovers

In response to the suspension of live sport, ABC Grandstand has introduced a range of new radio programs to keep sports fans entertained and up-to-date. 
The Head of ABC Sport, Nick Morris, said there was still a huge interest in quality, engaging sports content.  “We can’t replace live sport, but we can give sports fans a place to go where they can get involved in sport conversations and keep informed of the latest sport news.”

ABC Radio moves to inform, entertain and educate in the COVID19 crisis

The ABC's Managing Director David Anderson has outlined how the national broadcaster is keeping the nation informed, educated and entertained in response to COVID-19.

“Clearly, the challenge for the ABC is to continue providing the essential broadcast and digital services all Australians expect of us,” he said.

triple j’s special edition Ausmusic T-Shirt Day

Live gigs and festivals are being cancelled around the world, so to help support artists, triple j is holding a special edition of their annual Ausmusic T-Shirt Day on Friday 17 April.
Plus, they’ll be playing Australian music all day across the ABC’s networks including triple j, Double J, triple j Unearthed, ABC Radio, ABC Country, ABC Classic and ABC Jazz.

Vale John (Martin) Royal

Former ABC newsreader, soccer and public affairs commentator John (Martin) Royal passed away on the weekend aged 99, at Baptcare’s Karana nursing home in Kew.
John came to Australia at the end of WWII, joined the ABC, adopting the onair name of Martin as there was already a John Royal working in the Melbourne studios.
He went on to become one of the country’s most respected news readers and program presenters, first on radio, and later, from 1955, on TV.

When Stanley John Bancroft constructed his first crystal set as a young teenager in the 1920’s, it sparked a fascination with radio that lasted a lifetime.
Beginning with the PMG as a Junior Mechanic in Training and with an interest in radio, Stanley got his first job in broadcasting with 2CY, Canberra in 1938, to set up the parliamentary broadcasts.

When too much sport is barely enough, the ABC has announced that Rampaging Roy Slaven (John Doyle) and H.G. Nelson (Greig Pickhaver) will be on the radio just in time for the footy season, to present Bludging on the Blindside.

Indira Naidoo returns to the ABC

Indira Naidoo will return to the ABC in February to host ABC Radio’s Weekend Nightlife.

Ms Naidoo will present the national program each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, sharing hosting duties with Philip Clark, who presents the show Mondays to Thursdays.

The ABC will focus on the communities most affected by the ongoing bushfires as part of its 2020 Australia Day coverage.
The ABC will broaden its Australia Day coverage this year to include stories from the regions that have been impacted by bushfires.  Emergency broadcasting, however, will remain at the core of its service for those communities still under threat from bushfires.
