Bill Shorten asks Tony Abbott to review journalist terror laws

LABOR leader Bill Shorten has asked Tony Abbott to review anti-terror laws which could see journalists jailed for up to ten years. Mr Shorten has written to the Prime Minister to raise concerns over legislation passed by the federal parliament last month, saying while there is no higher importance than national security, press freedom is also paramount… The Senate on Wednesday passed the second tranche of the government’s security laws, which give spy agencies powers to crack down on homegrown foreign fighters. The government legislation prohibits travel to terrorist hot-spots without a valid excuse and makes it illegal to “promote” or “encourage” terrorism. Visiting a no-go zone is punishable by 10 years in prison.
