Newcastle University student, Rachel Storer is the winner of the inaugural Brian White Scholarship awarded by Commercial Radio Australia
 
In her final year of study and part of the student news team at the university radio station, Rachel said: "I'm very excited to be the recipient of the Brian White Scholarship. I'm looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and gaining firsthand experience within the radio news industry."
 

Commercial radio industry offers new journalism scholarship

The Brian White Scholarship, which opens today, offers aspiring journalists an eight-week paid work attachment, consisting of two weeks each at Macquarie Media, Southern Cross Austereo, Australian Radio Network and Nova Entertainment.

Joan Warner, the chief executive officer of industry body, Commercial Radio Australia, said: “The program aims to give final year students or recent graduates an opportunity to work alongside senior radio journalists and gain first-hand experience of how news is sourced and broadcast.”

At this year’s Australian Commercial radio Awards, ARN’s Sydney and Brisbane News Director Deborah Clay announced a new scholarship, which will give radio journalism students a chance to hone their skills across various networks.

Deborah talks to radioinfo about the new Brian White Scholarship, which sees radio networks put their rivalries aside for a good cause.

Deborah Clay is Sydney News Director at Southern Cross Austereo’s 2Day FM and Triple M. At the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, she received the prestigious Brian White Memorial Award, which recognises sustained achievement and effort across news, current affairs, entertainment and sport reporting.

radioinfo spoke to Deborah about her award.
