Broadcast Gurus aim to provide better training for young journos

Concerns about the training of young journalists have led two ABC veterans to set up a private company offering targeted tuition on radio and television broadcasting.

Glenn Trowbridge and Michaela Carr (pictured) have launched Broadcast Gurus, aimed at giving young journalists and journalism post-graduates the enhanced tools they need to make the most of the opportunities in the industry.

Broadcast Gurus offers one-on-one training sessions in radio and TV news writing, presentation, story pitching and creation, and production techniques.

“Many young journos or post grads already have the technical skills and theory but need a finishing course like ours to get them to industry standard,” Michaela said, “I teach at two universities in Perth so I see first-hand the potential of some graduates. It’s great to offer them something extra to make them stand out from the crowd.”

“Following on from that, we also work with journos already in the industry who are keen to hone their skills. We want to short-circuit the process for them, fast-track them to the next stage of their careers” says Glenn.

Glenn, who started his career in the country, understands the challenges for journalists in smaller markets and knows how hard it is to get stories up, let alone produce them well with limited direction and feedback.
