Digitising your studio to transmission chain: Aaron Alphonso's technical advice

Macquarie Media’s Chief Technology Officer Aaron Alphonso, this week delivered a wide ranging technology presentation in Malaysia at the annual Digital Broadcasting Symposium.

He discussed the most important technological considerations when digitising your studio to transmitter chain. Three key areas to consider are:

  • Audio Mixing, Routing and Delegation

  • Systems Integration

Cath Dwyer, the Manager of RN, Radio and Radio Australia has told the digital radio workshop at DBS Kuala Lumpur that Australia’s national broadcaster is committed to DAB+ transmission as part of its multiplatform strategy.

“The ABC is a trusted and well listened to public broadcaster in Australia. We host big national conversations such as the ‘War on Waste’ or the upcoming elections in our country.

“We have been broadcasting in the Asia Pacific for 80 years,” she said.

Europe mandates compulsory digital radios in cars

Europe has mandated that all new cars sold within the EU will now be required to have digital radios.

Car manufacturers have two years to comply with the new directive, that was ratified just before Christmas.

Meanwhile, in France, digital radio penetration has reached a point where it has triggered a law requiring that by the end of 2019, all new consumer radios to include DAB+.

The DAB technical standard has been updated, identifying obsolete features, clarifying the description of features to aid interoperability and updating other specific features.

The revised standard ensures the digital transmission technology keeps pace with the latest technical developments in its 21st year of existence.

The WorldDAB Technical Committee worked on the revisions to clarify and simplify the DAB system standard in a compatible way.

SCA announces 2 new radio stations

Southern Cross Austereo has launched two new digital radio stations, Easy and Oldskool.

The two stations add to SCA’s portfolio of DAB+ stations, Classic Rock, Kinderling Kids, Triple M Modern Rock Digital, The Range and Buddha.

Easy Radio, which was previously Stardust on the digital radio selector, is Australia’s new place for ‘Continuous Easy Favourites, with No Talk.’ SCA says it’s the perfect station "to take it Easy too while you work, on the commute, or while relaxing on the weekend."

You probably won't find a 3.5 mm audio socket in the next iPhone as Apple wants to slim down its revolutionary communicator.

It's another nail in the coffin for FM and DAB proponents that want smartphone manufacturers to 'activate' the radio tuning chip because delivery relies on headphone wires for aerials. There'll be some kind of connection for wired headphones, but it'll probably be proprietary and involve an adaptor for the 3.5 mm jack. The cost, convenience and privacy of wireless Bluetooth headphones is now and the future.
