Future of 1386 AM still unclear

The ABA is seeking public comment and submissions on a discussion paper, released on options for the future use of the 1386 AM frequency in Sydney.

The paper sets out issues surrounding the use of the frequency and suggests possible options for future use. It also includes background information.

ABA Chairman, Professor David Flint, says: “when the Authority decided not to allocate the community broadcasting licence, it gave an undertaking that after 12 months, it would review matters relating to possible uses for this frequency.

“The ABA would like to hear from key stakeholders and the general public about how it might best utilise this frequency and resolve some of the problems surrounding its use, given that it is the last unallocated planned frequency in the analog Sydney market.”

Options the discussion paper include keeping it for a community service, or using it for an open narrowcasting service; digital radio Mondiale trials; or other purposes.

The ABA welcomes written submissions from the public in relation to the applications received. Submissions should be lodged with the ABA by 5pm on Monday 21 June. Submissions can also be lodged via [email protected] (email).

Copies of any all submissions received will be displayed on the ABA’s website (www.aba.gov.au).
