Krock cops criticism for offensive song

Locals in Geelong are claiming that some songs on Krock are inappropriate with bands singing about heroin, DIY abortion and gonorrhea.

A Highton father thinks that “Shoulda Known Better” , by punk band Unwritten Law, should have an R-rating on the air.

Other songs like Nicklebacks “ Figured You Out “, have come under fire with its first line “I like your pants around your feet”.

The father, who did not want to be named say’s that “Shoulda Known Better “ was disgusting and made him change the dial in case his music-loving four-year-old son began to copy lines such as: “Abortion clinic, I shoulda forced the issue. But she did it with the hanger and some tissue”.

He said the station should be ashamed of playing the song, especially when it was heard at 3.30pm, when kids are listening on their way home from school.

K-Rock and Bay FM General Manager Bryce Nielsen said all songs were scrutinized prior to being aired and that “Shoulda Known Better” was one that slipped through. He said songs with obscene language weren’t played unless the station was provided with a “radio-edit” version.

“It’s getting harder and harder all the time especially with some of the rap and dance music,”

Mr Nielsen says that offended listeners should contact the station, as this is the first step for complaints according to the Commercial Radio Code of Practice, which provides guidelines on what should be played on the radio.

Listeners unhappy with the way a station deals with a complaint can take it to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, the Federal Governments’ regulator of television, radio and internet, but the authority’s media manager Donald Robertson told the Geelong Advertiser that if the authority found a breach there was little they could do.
