National Features and Documentary Series #CBAAconf

The first session after lunch at today’s CBAA Conferrence was a listening showcase highlighting the audio that has been produced for the National Features and Documentaries series this year.

Earlier this year Producers were invited to submit their idea for a feature or documentary and, after receiving many excellent submissions, 12 individuals were chosen to undertake mentoring and training with the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO) to bring their idea to fruition.

The project funded by the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF), aimed to build a culture of excellence in community radio. The content covered a huge variety of topics.

CMTO National Training Manager, Giordana Caputo said:

“We’ve got this amazing space in community radio to create something really different”

Emerging producer, Jane Arakawa from 2NSB mentored by Chloe Collins told the story of Australia’s first radio licensee. She had this to say about her experience on the project:

“The mentoring helped me immensely because i had never done a long form documentary before intact id never done a long form writing before.”

“One thing that stood out in the mentoring, because I had all these pieces I had to fit in and everyone wanted to get their point across, who was the first licensee and who was the first broadcaster, and chloe suggested doing a visual timeline… a timeline of where all these pieces fit and that helped me bring the story together.”

Her documentary explores the work of Charles Maclurcan, who erected aerial masts on top of the first Wentworth Hotel located on Church Hill Sydney in 1911 and was communicating with incoming and outgoing ships. By early 1922 he was broadcasting an entertaining and engaging radio program each week. Listen to the doco about Maclurcan here.

Take a listen to all 10 of the half hour documentaries here.

Martin Walters of the CBAA said applications for 2016 will be open in the new year and they are looking for submissions:

“You only need an idea you don’t need to have an audio or to even have made a documentary before”
