The expansion of digital radio to regional areas in Australia’s vast continent is an issue that has been challenging broadcasters and regulators for some time.

While DAB+ has been highly successful in Australia’s main population centres, its expansion to the rest of the country has slowed due to cost, technology and frequency issues.

Some of the submissions to the recent ACMA consultation on the Future of Radio revived discussion on the possibility of using DRM to solve some digital radio coverage issues in regional Australia.

New codecs that deliver better sound, hybrid slide show innovations, and more countries broadcasting in DRM were some of the latest developments presented by the Digital Radio Mondiale group at last week’s Digital Broadcasting Symposium in Kuala Lumpur.
Lindsay Cornell (pictured) explained the latest development in hybrid radio, which now enables RDS, slide shows and other program service information to be compatible across different standards. This will bring benefits for both receiver manufacturers and audiences.

DRM to trial in Indonesia

The Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium and the Indonesian public broadcaster, Radio Republik Indonesia, have announced a DRM30 digital radio trial and workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Indonesia is mostly coastal lowlands, larger islands and mountainous areas creating a challenging broadcasting landscape; RRI is exploring ways of overcoming these challenges to provide quality broadcasting services that can be received countrywide, with the efficient use of energy.
