triple j’s Ben & Liam snuck into Faith Lutheran College in South Australia to surprise year 11 student George Alice with some lifechanging news, that the 16-year-old solo artist had won triple j’s Unearthed High competition for 2019.

With alumni like Gretta Ray, Japanese Wallpaper, Asta, Mosquito Coast, Montaigne, Baro and Hockey Dad all going on to do massive things since first appearing in the competition, the ‘Class of 2017’ had a lot to live up to.

Kuren wins triple j Unearthed NIMA competition

18 year old producer Kuren is the 2016 winner of the triple j Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards competition.
Kuren, aka Curtis Kennedy, of the Wiradjuri people, grew up in the 1500-strong town of Hillston in regional NSW, before moving to Sydney to work on his music.

This morning, triple j Breakfast’s Matt & Alex snuck into Perth’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College to surprise the 2015 Unearthed High winner in front of their whole school.

For the eighth year running, triple j set out to find the very best high school music acts in Australia, and this year a new record has been set, with 1280 tracks by 850 acts uploaded to as part of Unearthed High.

The initiative was set up to encourage young Aussies to start writing and recording their own music and we are consistently impressed with the level of talent coming out of high schools, with past winners like Japanese Wallpaper, Asta and Stonefield going on to release music and tour it around the country.
