2TM pays tribute to John Williamson by changing its name

Tamworth’s 2TM will changes its name today to pay tribute to Aussie country music icon John Williamson’s 40 years in the music business.

Williamson first appeared on the TV Talent show New Faces in 1970. Now, 40 years on, as he hits the road to celebrate his musical journey, 1287 2TM will pay homage to one of Australia’s greatest storytellers by becoming 2JW for one day.

On June 4, the date that John recognises as the beginning of his career thanks to the launch of his first song Old Man Emu, 2TM will become “2JW- True Blue Radio” showcasing classic John Williamson songs, as well as cover songs from his latest CD and DVD release, 40 Years True Blue.

The remainder of the music playlist for the day will be made up of classic Australian songs, capturing the essence of True Blue Radio.

2JW will feature tributes from many of John’s contemporaries and various dignitaries, as well as offering True Blue fans the opportunity to win a copy of his latest Album & DVD.

2TM General Manager Gavin Flanagan has told radioinfo: “This is our way of saying thank you to John for 40 years of wonderful music. We’ve never changed the name of the radio station before and we wouldn’t just do it for anybody so I think that shows the respect 2TM has for John. He has always been a great friend to Tamworth and I can’t think of a better way to pay tribute to a true Australian icon. I can’t wait to listen to 2TM…oops…I mean 2JW this Friday!”
