80 years of ABC Radio Hobart

Discover radio as it was in 1938, right through to today.

ABC Radio Hobart is celebrating 80 years with an interactive exhibition at the Royal Tasmania Botanical Gardens.

An eclectic range of interactive displays, radios, broadcast equipment, rare photos and archival material to browse, overseen by the Sound Preservation Association of Tasmania will be on show.

Director of Regional and Local, Michael Mason said, “the story of ABC Radio Hobart is the story of Hobart itself over the past 80 years.  The station has been there for every milestone in the city’s history since we began broadcasting just prior to the start of the second World War.

“I’m pleased to say that ABC Radio Hobart is still part of everyday Hobart life as technology has taken us from the wireless, to social media platforms, and now to the digital DAB+ service launched just a few weeks ago.”

The exhibition will be officially launched live on the Weekends program with Chris Wisbey, Sunday April 15 from 10am-midday.

Then, Helen Shield broadcasts Your Afternoon from the exhibition, on Wednesday April 18 between 1.30-4pm.

Visitors can learn about the newly launched DAB+ Digital Radio, and try out the ABC listen app at the interactive listening station.
