98five dons the bandanas for cancer

98five‘s Kirste and Morro took the Brekky Show to Mosman Park Primary School, for the station’s fortnightly Free Coffee Friday.

The school yard was awash with bandanas as students supported National Bandana Day, which raises funds for CanTeen — an organisation that helps teenagers suffering from cancer.

Mosman Park School for Deaf Children shares the same site as the school. Both sets of students study the Auslan sign Language and deaf and hard of hearing students are mixed with hearing students in the classroom.

School Principal Monique Smith said the school uses sign language in the classroom, playground and in physical education.

“We’re the only primary school in WA for deaf children. It’s a great place where our students can come and be taught in their native language, which is Auslan,” Mrs Smith said.

“It really breaks a lot of communication barriers for our kids. It opens up social opportunities for our kids.

“For deaf
people mental health incidences are really high and the best thing you can do for that is open up communication and social opportunities.”

The show caught up with teachers Samantha Burton and Svetlana Stefanovic, YouthCARE Chaplain Rhonda Miller — who showcased the school’s heritage listed fig tree, which is the oldest and largest in WA — and Year 6 student Ruby fired up the ukulele and treated listeners to a rendition of ” I Don’t Know My Name” by America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal.

Teachers and parents indulged in free coffee and donuts thanks to friend of 98five, ice cream van man Paul.
