ABC responds to Gen Fricker’s Instagram post

The ABC has responded to Gen Fricker’s Instagram post about racism within triple j, with a spokesperson telling radioinfo:

We’re listening to feedback from former and current staff within our team as well as wider conversations, and reflecting on triple j’s place within them, both in terms of how we communicate as a team and with our audience.

“triple j’s proud of the ways we amplify diverse voices, music and issues on our airwaves but like a lot of organisations we can always do better. Racism is not acceptable at triple j or the ABC. Our team values equality and diversity and we have ABC-wide workplace guidelines and policies to ensure this.

“We also regularly discuss, at every level, our approach to making our workplace as inclusive as possible.”

The ABC has made increasing diversity in both its workforce and content a priority as both their Diversity & Inclusion Plan and Reconciliation Action Plan demonstrate. These diversity and inclusion goals include visible differences, such as gender, age, language, ethnicity, Aboriginal identity, cultural background and visible disabilities, and non-visible differences, such as sexual orientation, religious belief and invisible disabilities.

They also recognise the ways that people are different in other respects, such as family composition, educational level, socio-economic background, geographic location and diversity of perspectives and thought.

triple j’s Indigenous radio presenters and producers include the following who featured recently in the triple j unearthed indigenous takeover during Reconciliation Week.

Dave Woodhead – triple j Weekday Lunch presenter, stand-up comic and Torres Strait Islander man
Karla Ranby – triple j Weekend Lunch presenter, TV presenter and Gamilaroi woman
Ashley McGregor – triple j Breakfast Producer and Wathaurong woman
Marlee Silva – triple j presenter, writer, podcaster and Kamilaroi/Dunghutti woman
