Advice for Aussies on making it overseas

Scott Mayman has some news and advice on from OS.

…and who says having an accent can work against you! Well, those
who said this – I’ve just proved them wrong.

More than a year ago, I was appointed News Director
KCMO-AM Kansas City (similar to a 2UE/3AW/4BC news-talk station)
and is part of CBS News. Since then, I’ve received two broadcasting
excellence awards.

Research has found that my Australian accent has been a drawcard and
management has decided to move me.

I’m still News Director and co-ordinator of Special Events News
(aka: upcoming war) for all four stations in our Kansas City
operation.

Effective Immediately,
I read breakfast News on KCMO-AM.
the guy who used to read breakfast gets moved to afternoons,
the guy who used to read afternoons becomes our new police and courts
reporter (which fills a gap – the position recently became available).

This may not mean much back in Australia….but it certainly means
a lot to my fellow Australian colleagues who are looking to embark on
a career overseas…. It can be done… but it just takes time.

Hang in there guys!
