April Fool’s radio joke leaves Sydney commuters fuming

WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda were in fine form this morning for April Fool’s Day.

How do you evoke the wrath of Sydney-siders?

Make their daily commute even worse …

This morning Jonesy & Amanda announced news that Sydneysiders would soon be hit with more tolls with every bridge from the ANZAC Bridge though to Tom Ugly’s Bridge.

The announcement came off the back of a new ad from The Department of Future Infrastructure the station ran explaining why the tolls were being introduced and a website (http://bridgethegap.sydney/ ) explaining that all road users (including bicycle riders) in Sydney will be required to pay a road toll when crossing most bridges in the greater Sydney region.

They even got newsreader Sarah Forster in on the elaborate prank.

Motorists would also be required to purchase a new Bridge Toll Tag, or ‘B Tag’ that will automatically charge the nominated amount, and must be fitted to the windshield exactly 50 centimetres to the right of any existing E Tag or a double fee will be incurred.

As always with news that affects their listeners, Jonesy & Amanda opened up the reaction line which was inundated with annoyed listeners only too happy to share their thoughts.

Along with outraged couriers and others who cross several bridges during their commute, one listener remarked: “It’s totally unreasonable – what will they think of next, a footpath toll?”

Another miffed called said: “No way would I want to be paying a toll to cross the Spit Bridge, they should be paying me to use that bridge”

And one cheeky listener suggested, “I think they should call it the BS Tag – it stinks!”

This outrage bubbled away for a lot of the morning and was one of the most hotly debated reaction lines this year, until Jonesy & Amanda finally put their listeners’ minds at ease revealing it was all an April Fool’s Day Prank.

Take a look here at what other radio stations got up to on April Fool’s Day 2016.
