The Australian Podcast beating Serial

Phoebe’s Fall is a 6-episode podcast and Fairfax Media’s first, by investigative print journalists Michael Bachelard and Richard Baker at The Age.

Heavily researched, it tells the story of a beautiful young woman who ends up at the bottom of a garbage chute 12 floors down from her luxury apartment. Power and intrigue, drugs and booze and controlling older boyfriend. It’s about the justice system as well as the tragic loss of Phoebe at 24 – was it suicide, accident, or foul play?

Former radio journalists Siobhan McHugh and Julie Posetti were “consulting producers” on the podcast “who helped turn it into audio”.

Phoebe’s Fall is number one on iTunes ahead of the award-winning American Podcast Serial, hosted by Sarah Koenig.

Born in Dublin, Siobhan graduated from University College Dublin with a B.Sc and worked as an editor, writer, and radio producer, before emigrating to Australia in 1985.

Julie Posetti is a Research Fellow with the World Association of News Publishers and the World Editors Forum based in Paris where she is undertaking a UNESCO-commissioned study on Privacy and Journalists’ Sources and writing about journalism ethics and practice in an age of industry upheaval. She is also a journalism academic at the University of Wollongong, Australia, where she teaches social and broadcast journalism.
