Basil Zempilas will leave 6PR if he is elected Mayor of Perth

The West Australian is reporting (subscription required) that Basil Zempilas says he will walk away from talkback radio at the end of the year if he is successful in his City of Perth mayoral bid.

Zempilas’ rivals have questioned whether his existing media roles would allow him the time to take on Perth’s Mayoral role, and he revealed that in discussions with Managing Director of Nine Radio, Tom Malone, they had agreed that the talkback radio and lord mayors role wouldn’t work.

Zempilas told the West Australian that “…”as a result we’ve reached a decision that in 2021, if I’m successful, I won’t continue on. (Nine) was certainly right up front about feeling that it was probably incompatible being the lord mayor and being a host on talkback radio and I accepted that.”

While he will leave 6PR if successful, Zempilas will continue with 7NEWS except on days it clashes with important council obligations such as meetings and functions.
