Burn your radio for Beyond Blue

Ex-Radio Announcer turned heavy music journo Paul ‘Browny’ Brown, endured his own decade-plus mental health struggles while working in the radio industry.

After speaking with countless former and current employees who feel the same way, he aims to cathartically close that chapter of his life by departing the industry with a bang and a worthy cause.

Between 2008 and 2020, Browny hid his struggles from workmates and peers in the industry because of the stigma associated with discussing taboo subjects like depression and anxiety in the open.

Paul (pictured right) says, “Despite being a supporter of mental health awareness, there was this ‘suck it up’ mentality throughout the industry where staff were expected to get the job done, regardless of the way they were feeling…There was no such thing as mental health days and, as an announcer, you had to go to work each day with a big smile on your face… regardless of how you were truly feeling on the inside.”

Some of these stories came to light recently when Browny teamed up with his former breakfast radio co-host, Chris Baskerville, for a podcast celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their show that commenced in Orange, NSW.

During the recording, the pair discussed on and off-air antics, personal anecdotes, as well as their own personal struggles which took place behind the studio walls.

Browny hopes his Burn Your Radio campaign will encourage those working in the radio industry to reach out to their colleagues if they’re struggling and need someone to talk to, or simply to instigate more conversations about these subjects and how people can seek help for themselves or someone they know using Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service.

“This organisation does an incredible job and with a 42% increase in calls to their Support Services during the COVID-19 pandemic (from March to December 2020) compared to the same time in 2019, the community’s support has never been more important.” adds Paul.

Browny’s Burn Your Radio campaign has made available a limited-edition shirt available for pre-order now until Thursday, February 18th with 100% of proceeds from sales directly donated to the mental health and wellbeing support organisation, Beyond Blue.
