Controversial Rolleston Mine transmitter off air

The controversial self help transmitter at the Rolleston Mine is currently off air.

In an article last month, radioinfo raised the issue of the self help transmitter that was rebroadcasting a Triple M station from outside the service area.

SCA had originally agreed to the retransmission, but there were several other issues that were worrying about this rebroadcast.

  • Other licencees in the area had not been consulted about an out of area service coming into the licence area (ACMA is not obliged to consult, but it could be considered good practice)
  • The signal covered an area much greater than just the mine and its immediate surrounds
  • The retransmission could create a policy precedent that would make the licence area planning process irrelevant
  • There were some “administrative errors” in the ACMA’s approval process that confused the issue further

While the immediate problem has been solved it is not known whether the larger issues have yet been resolved satisfactorily.

We will keep you updated.
