Eureka! Awards for outstanding science reporting

Entries are invited for the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes, which raise the profile of science in the community by acknowledging and rewarding
outstanding achievements in Australian science and in the
promotion of science. Media prizes are offered to science reporters.

Begun in 1990, the Eureka Prizes have grown
into Australia’s pre-eminent and most comprehensive national
science awards. They are “a unique partnership between the federal and
NSW state governments and a range of educational institutions and
private sector organisations and companies to celebrate the
vitality, originality and excellence of Australia’s science.”

A record 21 prizes worth $210,000 are on offer in 4 categories:
education; industry and innovation; research; and science
communication.

New prizes in 2003 are for inspiring science
(sponsored by the British Council), for innovative grains research
that improves the environmental sustainability of growing
introduced grains (sponsored by the Grains Research and
Development Corporation), and for outstanding scientific research
involving scientists in two or more disciplines (sponsored by the
Royal Societies of Australia).

Most prizes carry a cash reward of $10,000. The British Council
Eureka Prize for inspiring science involves travel, accommodation
and program assistance for a study tour to the UK to the value of
$10,000.
