Felicity Urquhart named as finalist in ABC local radio awards

ABC Radio will announce the winners of the 2010 ABC Local Radio Awards this week, with Golden Guitar winner Felicity Urquhart in the running for the Best New Talent category. Urquhart is now the host of ABC Saturday Night Country after the retirement of John Nutting earlier in the year.

After a selection process involving peer assessment teams and industry guests around the country, a national judging panel has selected finalists from 300 entries. Urquhart is delighted with her finalist nomination:

“I’ve tried to keep Saturday Night Country as one of Australia’s premier music programs, and am truly enjoying being able to bring new, old and obscure country music into the homes across Australia. I have to also thank my producers each week for helping me with the show. They are a dedicated bunch who make my life a lot easier.”

Felicity Urquhart has travelled to Hobart to be part of the awards this week, at a ceremony hosted by ABC Local Radio Presenter Richard Fidler.

It has been a busy few months for Urquhart, with a regular role on Channel Seven’s Sydney Weekender, and guest spots on ABC TV’s Spicks & Specks and Channel Ten’s Ready Steady Cook adding to her radio commitments.

After her visit to Tasmania, Felicity will head to the Southern Highlands of NSW in mid September where she has been invited to host the Australian Hoteliers Association’s (NSW) 175 Years celebration of NSW Country Pubs, to be held at the Surveyor General Inn, Berrima. She will also perform at the Maitland Muster in October.

Director of ABC Radio Kate Dundas says the number and quality of this year’s entries highlights the breadth and depth of talent across the network:

“With the level of talent amongst our content makers, there was very strong competition for the awards this year. The shortlist of finalists represents some of the most creative and innovative talent on Local Radio.”

Established in 2001, the ABC Local Radio Awards recognise and celebrate the talent and dedication of ABC Local Radio staff who deliver entertaining radio and engaging cross-media content to local communities around Australia. Open to content makers from the nine metropolitan and 51 regional ABC Local Radio stations across the country, the categories recognise both individual and station excellence in broadcast and online content.

Saturday Night Country can be heard from 10pm Saturday to 2am Sunday AEST on ABC Local Radio and on ABC Country through Digital Radio in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
