Happy Hottest 100 Day

Matty, a triple j twitter follower, reflected the views of many as he wished readers ‘Happy Hottest 100 Day’ this Australia Day.

Matty is one of millions who will be listening to the triple j countdown in homes, in pubs and at Australia Day parties, here and all around the world.

Hundreds of public parties have registered on the triple j website and are displayed on an interactivbe map (pictured above), while thousands more private parties will take place today as the countdown tracks Australia’s most loved triple j songs. In total there are also 2,089 Hottest 100 parties registered in more than 70 countries across the globe.

The countdown kicks off at midday today, Eastern Australian time.

Listeners, musicians and triple j presenters have all voted for their favourites. Voting closed on Friday January 22, with people allowed to vote for a maximum of 10 songs.

Songs could either be selected from the voting list, or listeners could add in ones that don’t appear on the list as long as they met the Hottest 100 eligibility criteria.

This year more voters than ever have cast their ballots from 172 countries.

triple j’s content director Ollie Wards said:

“We received about 2,094,000 votes from 298,851 people. That’s the most amount of people who have ever voted in the Hottest 100.”

In this year’s countdown, 54% of the songs in the countdown are from Australian artists.

There are 26 Hottest 100 debutantes on the list.

As songs play, they will also tweeted on social media. Watch the twitter feed to see listeners debate their choices throughout the day.
