The highly evolving and changing media environment

The release of  Jacobs Media’s 11th annual national web survey has uncovered “a highly evolving and changing media environment” yet in many ways remaining traditional at its core.

There are a number of interesting trends such as the emergence of smart watch usage (2%) and the appearance of Netflix.

Not surprisingly Smartphone ownership continues to rise with two thirds downloading radio-centric apps with Pandora leading the pack. Yet only 39% of smartphone users have an unlimited data plan and more than half of those with a limited data plan use less data when they are at or near their cap.

There are some weaknesses in the methodology as the sample was recruited heavily from radio users, therefore those who never listen to the radio, may not be included so we may not know their habits.

That aside, of those surveyed being local matters to radio listeners and radio continues to lead the way in new music discovery.

More than half of respondents say the majority of their radio listening happens in the car and despite having connectivity to smartphones and MP3’s in their vehicle, 9 out 10 prospective new car buyers say it’s important for a vehicle to have an AM/FM radio.
