Tamworth Broadcasting Society’s (TBS) new high power transmitter on Who’d-A-Thought-It lookout at Quirindi began broadcasting on Monday, 22nd June at 12 noon.
ACMA granted TBS a full broadcast repeater licence covering all of the Liverpool Plains. The Authority said this is one of the most significant licence approvals for community broadcasting in the region since FM broadcast commenced in the 1980’s.
For the first time, listeners will be able to hear New England and Northwest’s radio 88.9fm programs rebroadcast on 96.3fm.
These new transmitters will double the station’s coverage to over 20,000 square kilometres and reach to over 85,000 people.
Federal Member for New England Barnaby Joyce switched on the new transmitters and said he was pleased to see the new transmission service established in the Liverpool Plains. “When people turn on the radio, they want to hear local content presented by local people and that’s what this broadcast will deliver.
“I’ve been working behind the scenes to help the Radio 88.9fm team gain the approvals they need, so it’s great to see their long-held ambition now a reality in Quirindi.”
CEO George Frame said “This service is the culmination of over 4 years lobbying ACMA for the licence with the assistance of the Federal Member. That the partnership with LPSC and the assistance of Mayor Andrew Hope will bring a range of services from an independent regional community broadcaster to the region”.
Mr Frame said a new regional news service is scheduled to commence immediately plus it is the only station in Northern NSW on iHeart radio and heard across Australia and the world
