The music team at 2Day have flicked the switch to include more older songs in their playlist.
Over the last week, since we reported the change, there has been a lot of industry talk about the strategy that 2Day is undertaking, moving away from its contemporary CHR playlist to include more songs that are older than usual.
Either it is a stroke of genius to widen out the appeal of the format, or it a an act of desperation because the stations can’t get traction against its competitors, it depends on who you talk to.
According to SCA, the tweak to the music has come as a result of listener feedback and the station wants to give the listeners what they desire.
But how much of a change is there?
It certainly seems from sample playlists for one day in December and one day this week, that the station is indeed playing more older songs than it was playing last year.
But the ratings have not yet begun. Was 2Day just ‘putting it out there’ to see what the audience reaction would be, before the ratings start and the rest of its announcers return, or is a long term switch in policy? There are no loose lips in the SCA camp at the moment, no one is talking, but we expect to hear from them next week once the ratings begin, with more information about the station’s strategy.
Meanwhile, compare for yourself. With the help of our friends at AirCheck, we have compiled a list of songs played between 7-10am, comparing 15th December with 18th January.

Definitely more oldies artists and tracks this month.
Have all the daytime jocks been axed? There is no one on.

Daytime jocks will be back next week, it was just the new breakfast show that began early.
2Day could be a great project for Charlie Fox
What this station needs is a complete revamp ... starting with the programme department and finishing with a decent breakfast programme.
Can't see that happening with the current management!
