Matt and Alex’s perfect prank on weekend announcer

triple j breakfast hosts Matt and Alex got the ultimate payback when they played the perfect prank on Kyran Wheatley, host of Weekend Breakfast.

Two Saturdays ago, Kyran woke up Alex Dyson live on air to gloat about Alex’s favourite AFL team getting flogged. As a result, Operation Buttered Toast was launched.

At 5.30am on Monday, the triple j Weekend Breakfast host received a call to fill in on triple j Breakfast for a sick Matt and Alex. By 6am Kyran was on air broadcasting the national program, complete with music, talk-back callers, listener texts and news bulletins. Or so he thought. Hiding in another studio were Matt & Alex, where unbeknownst to Kyran, the real Breakfast show was being broadcast, switching back and forth to his parallel studio for one massive hoax.

The elaborate plan included all the talk-back calls being made by the Breakfast presenters themselves, and enlisting the help of triple j listeners to send messages to Kyran via the triple j text line, to make the show seem legit.

The jig wasn’t up until 7am, an hour into the show, when Kyran listened back to what he thought was his show and overheard Alex Dyson saying ‘I can’t wait to see his face’. Alex quickly made one last prank call to request his favourite song, ‘Payback by Alex Dyson’.

A victorious Alex Dyson said: “Breakfast radio hosts need their sleep. So when Weekend Brekkie upstart Kyran Wheatley woke me up at 7am on a Saturday to gloat about a Collingwood loss, I knew I had to get him back. In the end it included six hidden cameras, 3 hidden mics, 2 studios and a million listeners on one massively elaborate joke.”

Kyran said: “I‘m not angry, I’m actually quite impressed. But this isn’t over, send payback ideas to 0439 757 555 from 6 – 10am Saturday and Sunday.”
