Mike Hammond is back on 2DayFM

Mike Hammond is back on 2DayFM, quietly returning to mornings with little or no fanfare this week.

When Austereo bought 2Day from the Lamb family in 1989, Mike was their second hire, after Keith Williams, and was put on nights with the Hot Seven at Seven.

He remembers that in his first survey the ratings dropped, as 2Day purposely killing off the station’s old easy-hits format and lost audience. That trend quickly reversed.

Mike says, “Soon enough we instituted the familiar 2Day format along with the rest of the new line-up. I was on mornings and we’d taken the station to No 1 within a year or two.

In 1995 I made the full-time jump to TV with gigs at Seven for Gladiators and also with a brand new outfit called Foxtel!!

He says, “It was an amazing rocket-ship ride for those 6 years (1989 – 1995) and somehow 2DayFM had always felt like my “radio home” … and to be back there now, in the same time-slot, is such a thrill and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be joining the amazing 2DayFM team of 2021.”

Mike has told radioinfo, “I was amazed and very humbled by the number of calls I received today from listeners welcoming me back on-air and following me “back home” to 2DayFM.  Radio – you just can’t beat that connection between you and a listener … it really does become very personal.”

Mike is part of the announcing roster at 2Day following the vacancy created when Jamie Angel moved to Brisbane.
