New Radio Copywriting Course

Enrolments have opened for a new radio copywriting course, starting later this month, to equip wordsmiths with the skills and techniques to produce good radio creative.

Commercial Radio Australia CEO, Joan Warner, says “writing well for radio is often challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Enhancing the skills of radio creatives is a key focus for the commercial radio industry, as part of an overall strategy to increase advertisers’ use of the medium.

“Writing creatively for radio takes incredible skill, talent and idea generation, hence the development of this course. The idea is to provide industry copywriters with a broader range of radio writing skills, growing the pool of very talented people who specialise in writing for radio.”

The ‘Creative Craft of Radio Copywriting’ course costs $900 and will be run twice a year by the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). Developed jointly by CRA and renowned industry copywriters, Kevin Best and John Dickson, the 12 week correspondence course covers marketing and advertising, ideas’ generation, the copywriting brief and writing the advertisement.

Joan Warner says: “copywriters for radio ads are under incredible time pressure to perform and have the unique job of writing specifically for audio – a difficult task. Feedback from a pilot course last year has been very positive. All agree the benefits are considerable.”

Some of the feedback includes:

“The content was great – the techniques throughout the course were a real eye opener”;

“A very good course, very thorough and well presented. I benefited a lot from it and just wish it was around when I first got into radio!”;

“The course is great for individuals who are new to the industry or who want to crack into copywriting.”

Graduating students will receive a nationally recognised AFTRS’ qualification.
