Tully Smyth is, Tully shares the story of her mother’s 23 year battle with dementia (who recently passed away) and how important it is for people to know that Dementia and Alzheimer disease was the leading cause of death for females in Australia.

Tully says, “So yeah, for those who don’t know, my Mum passed away last Monday after a 23 year-long battle with early-onset Alzheimers and I spent the last 3 days by her side.

“In fact, I was the last person to see her alive. And I am going to do everything I can to push this euthanasia – because that’s something else now that… I just want to say I’m so sorry… she did not look like a human being.

“She was so thin, her eyes were sunken into her head, you know it was horrendous. That’s not a way to live, and she was like that for many many years, and it’s just it’s not fair.

“You know, I’d have these like graphic, I guess they’re like daydreams of wanting to help her and like how can I help her? And I’d have these horrific images of suffocating her with a pillow or how can I push her, how can I help her out of this – because there’s nothing.

“You can’t do anything. It’s just really tough. It’s just really tough to watch someone you love just completely wither away, and then get stuck.”
