RN’s Waleed Aly to host Andrew Ollie media lecture

The 2016 Andrew Olle Media Lecture will be delivered by Waleed Aly, on Friday 14 October 2016 and broadcast on 702 ABC Sydney.

ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie described Waleed as an original voice in Australian national affairs and an outstanding choice for this year’s Andrew Olle Lecture, delivered in memory of one of Australia’s greatest journalists.

“The ABC is delighted Waleed has accepted our invitation to deliver the 2016 Andrew Olle Media Lecture,” Ms Guthrie said.

“His contribution to Australian public discourse as a writer, commentator, broadcaster and academic, has made him a much admired and respected voice in our society. He has managed a rare feat by appealing to both mainstream and specialised audiences, evidenced by his Gold Logie win this year while also co-hosting a religion and ethics program on ABC RN.”

Waleed is a broadcaster, author, academic, musician and currently co-host of Network Ten’s The Project and co-host of ABC RN’s The Minefield.

He has tackled comedy as both a writer and presenter for SBS’s Salam Cafe along with hard-hitting news as a host of 774 ABC Melbourne’s Mornings program.

His other broadcasting achievements include sporting analysis on ABC News 24’s The Drum and political analysis on Q&A and BBC World.  With regular appearances on Meet the Press, 7.30 and Offsiders, Waleed has become widely recognised and trusted by audiences across Australia.

Waleed hosted ABC RN’s Drive program for three years from 2012–2014 and is a lecturer in politics at Monash University, working in their Global Terrorism Research Centre.

“This is one of those moments when you’re simply too intimidated to say yes, but too honoured to say no,” Waleed said.  “In the end, the chance to honour a giant like Andrew Olle simply had to prevail.  Here’s hoping I can go even halfway to doing justice to the occasion.  And if not, then at least the catering is good.

The Andrew Olle Media Lecture focuses on the role and future of the media.

The lecture has continued to grow in stature since its inception in 1996. Waleed Aly follows a long line of distinguished speakers, including Helen McCabe, Kate McClymont, Lisa Wilkinson, Mark Colvin, Laurie Oakes, Ray Martin, John Hartigan, John Doyle, Lachlan Murdoch, Kerry Stokes AO, Jana Wendt and David Williamson.

The lecture is held in honour of one of the ABC’s iconic broadcasters, Andrew Olle.  Following his death from a brain tumour in 1995, a fund was set up for brain cancer research. The money raised from the lecture goes directly to the Cure Brain Cancer Neuro-oncology Group at UNSW, which is now a world leader in personalised medicine for this type of cancer.

It will be delivered at a black tie dinner at the Australian Technology Park, in Eveleigh, Sydney on Friday 14 October. Tickets are available for purchase here for $180 or $1800 for a table of 10 (GST included).

The evening will be hosted by 702 ABC Sydney Drive presenter Richard Glover.

The event will be broadcast nationally on ABC NewsRadio on Friday 14 October at 9pm and broadcast in Sydney on 702 ABC Sydney on Sunday 16 October at 11.00am
