SBS Director of Radio resigns

After 17 years as head of SBS Radio, Quang Luu is stepping down.

Over the years, Quang has overseen the growth and consolidation of SBS Radio, from its relatively humble two-city origins to a professional national broadcaster.

In a memo to staff, Shaun Brown, managing director of SBS said: “ Quang has provided strong leadership within SBS Radio and, at the same time, has been a highly successful and effective champion of SBS in its dealings with community and government representatives.”

“Quang’s time at SBS Radio is notable for many changes, including the launch of the national network and a second frequency for Sydney and Melbourne; the introduction of programs in the common language, English; intensive professional retraining and digital studio refurbishment; the implementation of two comprehensive revisions to the program schedule; the organisation of successive and highly successful radiothons that have raised millions of dollars; the launching of the high-profile outside broadcast units that have criss-crossed the nation; and the streaming of Radio programs and content on the SBS website.”

Quang has been the guiding force behind SBS Radio for more than half of its life and he leaves with the respect and admiration of his colleagues and friends within SBS, and the high regard of the communities he has so successfully served. In 2002, Quang was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his services to multicultural broadcasting and community service.

Quang’s final day at SBS is 20 July. Advertisements will be placed this week for the Director Radio position and I hope for the speedy appointment of Quang’s successor.

We will be identifying appropriate opportunities for you to farewell Quang and will advise you shortly.”
