Something fishy about RN’s Lonely Hearts Club show: readers out the real hosts

Regular readers may remember a small story we ran a couple of weeks ago about what appeared like a worthy type of Radio National program, a kind of radio self-help show for single men. A few readers suggested we have a good listen to the show, so we checked it out and here at radioinfo we think things are not really what they seem. Is The Lonely Hearts Club a real ABC show, or some sort of satire or mocumentary?

The supposed group of lonely hearts club boys feels like a similar brand of satire as the Coodabeen Champions or the footy icons HG and Roy. What do you think?

The group have claimed to have “little or no radio experience,” and that they approached ABC Management saying that single ‘lonely hearts’ men are an underserved group of listeners who should be given a program.

Our radioinfo ears may be mistaken, but was one of those voices Tony Martin?

We think the other voices are a bit more professional than they claim to be too, but we can’t work out who they are, although your comments are coming in thick and fast (see bottom of page). Any thoughts please deposit your speculation in the box below? Some listeners have already been playing an audio guessing game to pick the real voices – see if you agree with their thoughts in the boxes below. Outed presenters include: Stephen Curry, Angus Sampson, Sam Pang.

Initial approaches to the ABC to see if there is something more to this than meet the ears have had no response so far, but something smells fishy to us.

The web site doesn’t give much of a clue as the faces don’t seem familiar, but how could a group of dumped blokes get a show in the first place and then attract comedy talent like Alan Brough, and seem so comfortable with him? And the lines seem a little too funny to be a serious self-help program.

For example, how did the Lonely Hearts Club boys cope with Valentines Day?

And are these characters, like John-Michael,

or these callers real?
