Vale John Spence

The ABC’s Senior Researcher in Archives, John Spence, died peacefully over the weekend.

In a note to staff, ABC Director Regional & Local, Judith Whelan, wrote

As a Senior Radio Researcher in Archives, John was one of those people who connected in so many ways with so many people over the 30 plus years he worked here.  He has always been the first person our program teams would go to for help with archival material and his knowledge of ABC Radio’s history was second-to-none.

He was also the go-to person for R&L teams around the country when they needed historical or archival packages produced.  Many of you will also be very familiar with the beautifully-crafted Year-in-Review programs he made for R&L, RN and NewsRadio over the past 10 years or so.

Nothing was ever too much trouble for John.  He was always a pleasure to work with and his colleagues remember him as a total professional with the supreme ability to sum up a whole year in just a few minutes!  He was also known for his wonderful sense of humour, his interest in the world and the people who made the news, which, according to those who worked closely with him, meant that his scripts were always a joy to read.

John’s untimely death is a great loss to the ABC and to the many people who could rely on his accuracy, dependability, and thoroughness.   He will be hugely missed and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.
