Seems to me to be standard commercial practice. You buy the company, and you get its assets and its liabilities. I'm sure JL made a lot of money working for 2UE, and 2UE made a lot of money from having John on the payroll. No one should be too upset.
Re: 2DayFM Kyle & Jackie O News Story
How widespread is the use of a 10 second delay for live to air broadcasts these days?
My understanding was that this ability was designed for use on programs (ostensibly talkback) as a buffer to help protect the station (and callers) from inadvertantly breaching the codes.. and preventing issues where announcers might say the wrong thing and be forced to '[flounder] around, signalling to the producers and Jackie – down the camera – indicating that we had to get it off air.'
Surely with a delay, issues such as this one, which lead to unfortunate embarrassment all round, are far better served by the panel operator touching a button causing - at worst - a disjointed break mid sentence.
My guess is that most talkback stations still run on live delay, but what about the others?
Simply asking a 14 year old about her sex life, with or without a lie detector is child abuse, in my view. It's a shame the presenters and the station are showing no remorse for a foolish stunt. It's a shame the ACMA has to "sit on it's hands" until an unsatisfactory reply is received via the elongated process of our Broadcasting Legislation. Perhaps the Commercial radio Industry should have an addition to its Code of Practice protecting minors from "predatory pranks" such as these. And add "simulated prank calls" that have caused damage in the past while you're at it.
If the Management of Austereo can't recognize that the community is outraged, and if they don't take appropriate action, then perhaps questions should be raised about their fitness to control a large part of this country's media.

I cannot believe how Kyle loves himself so much that all he really thinks of throughout this whole situation is himself. I've done this to Journos and I would have still put it to air. Gosh Pal.... get a life and for once in your miserable existance think of some one else. Then again what goes round comes round and i think it is great to read where others are giving him such a hard time. Get used to it Kyle, I hope it does not let up for a while yet. Maybe you might realise that everyone doesn't love you as much as you love yourself.

The segment's topic was designed to be tasteless, immature and entertaining only to morons, even BEFORE things hit the fan.
Apart from 'what' is dished out to those developing, approving, setting up and executing this bottom of the barrell concept, a major decision lies with the advertising fraternity, i.e. agencies, their clients & direct clients. The obvious question is "Irrespective of ratings (quantity over quality and decency ?)do we continue to fuel this type of broadcasting or do with contribute to its extinction by turning off the supply ?"
If the SMH quote in your lead-in "we're not on a time delay, but even if we were, I wouldn't have dumped the segment" is accurate, this revelation will no doubt help in answering the above question. Whilst money talks, it can also walk !

shhhh....if you listen really carefully you can hear the Austereo Execs high fiveing each other!!
There are so many things that are wrong with this its simply not funny. I don't understand how any station can think it is a smart way to broadcast without a delay.
I also wonder how much the rest of the media and the public are making Kyle & Jackie O scapegoats? Since when do announcers have the only say in what segments they put to air? What about the producers? The content advisor? The program director?
A 14yo girl should have never been asked those questions in a public forum, but why are Kyle & Jackie O the only ones to blame. I'm sure there were people behind the scenes that knew what the segment was about and allowed it to run (and most likley ran it past their legals) so if Kyle and Jackie O must go surely theirs shouldn't be the only head which roll?
