Online mob rule must end: Leveson

New laws were likely to be needed to regulate publishing on the internet in order to safeguard privacy against "an element of mob rule" that existed online, Lord Justice Brian Leveson told a privacy conference in Sydney yesterday.

In his first public speech since last week’s release of his report on Britain’s phone-hacking scandal, Lord Leveson contrasted blogs and social media sites with the mainstream media, saying there remained a perception that online publishing did not have the same legal constraints.
