Media policy is more of a niche issue, but challenging for this government, which is at war with News Ltd, at rock bottom in the polls and facing an election in (at best) a little over a year. The government is looking at bringing in a ”public interest” test, when there are changes of ownership. It is also considering setting up an independent (but government-funded) cross-media regulator able to consider complaints and require corrections of errors. But any radical change will be bitterly fought by the media companies, with News Ltd already raising the spectre of High Court action, writes Michele Gratten in this Age opinion piece, whcih also covers industrial relations.
