Just three weeks after his 19th birthday, soon-to-be graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Tim Wong-See, has landed the job of his dreams, on-air at leading Sydney FM station Nova 96.9.
Tim completed his HSC in 2012 and has spent this year with 17 others studying for a Graduate Diploma in Radio at AFTRS in Sydney.
The students toured Nova 96.9 two months ago as part of their course and within three hours of the tour, Tim had sent a demo to Program Director Brendan Taylor who was suitably impressed and invited Tim to spend his two weeks work attachment at Nova.
Tim turned 19 on October 26 and started his placement two days later where he was thrown in to present the mid dawn shift.
Brendan said: “After a very successful AFTRS work placement we’re thrilled to be able to offer Tim work with the Nova Network. He’s a very talented a promising young announcer with a big future ahead. He jumped at the chance to do mid dawn shifts and be mentored by Rabbit, Harlee and the Sydney programming team.”
Tim is a radio junky. When he was 12 he launched his own pirate radio station from the family home in West Pennant Hills. It operated for two years until it was shut down by the Australian Communications and Media Authority for disrupting TV reception in his neighbourhood.
AFTRS Director Radio Mark Collier, said: “Tim is one of the youngest students to study radio at AFTRS. His passion and potential were clear from the moment we met him here during one of our open days. It’s been great to see him grow professionally and personally, he has a big future and we’re delighted Nova has recognized Tim’s potential.”
Tim will graduate at a ceremony at AFTRS on Friday 6 December.
