2NZ celebrates 75th birthday

Past and present staff are invited to help 2NZ Inverell celebrate its 75th birthday on 29th January at the Inverell RSM Club. In 1936 the station first went on the air, using the call-sign 2LV, but less than a year later the demand for the services was so great that an increase in power to 2kW was granted, and the name was changed to 2NZ. For a little bit of nostalgia, listen to a snippet of 2NZ history, a news bulletin from 1973, contributed by a radioinfo subscriber who read this story and dug out an old cassette from 2NZ’s ‘Magnetic Radio’ era.

The station is currently part of the Super Radio Network, but the origins of the callsign 2NZ are a little hazy. The Graziers Association had been granted a licence for 2GZ at Orange and was also then granted a licence for Narrabri which was to be 2NZ, presumably in line with the Orange callsign, signifying Narrabri Graziers. 2NZ was for a 2000 watt station and Country Broadcasting Services proposed to combine the two licences into one, so 2NZ emerged from there. The station later moved from Narrabri to Inverell.

The Radio Heritage Foundation profiled some of the station’s early announcers, Allison Black and Jim Illiffe from some local newspapers at the time.
