4BC’s news team deal with an unwanted visitor

Reading & writing news every half hour between 5 and 10am on a News/Talk station can be an unrelenting sprint.

On Friday morning for 4BC’s Steve Barker, there was something else competing for his time, a lizard, and not a cute little gecko here, either.

Water Dragons are a major feature in the River City, in parklands, backyards, under bridges, etc, and for 4BC, which is undergoing major building works, under the reception desk.

After scaring the Summer breakfast host, 9 weatherman, Luke Bradnham, it was decided that someone at 6.30am needed to be “the hero” in the station.

Producers – “No!”

Panel ops, “Get me out of here!”

So Steve Barker, Brekky newsreader got down on his hands and knees and looked under; desks, couches and paper stashes.

After15 minutes Herman (name given by Steve) the water dragon appeared.

All puffed up and proud, but it took another 20 mins between bulletins, to capture him, with a banana and a broom.

He then had his starring moment On Air, before being released in a nearby park, “…to go home!”

For Steve it was “Just another interesting day at Brisbane’s News leader, 882 4BC.”
