David & Tanya find new house for Newcastle fire victims

KO FM’s breakfast presenters David & Tanya spoke with the Assistant Principal of Kurri Kurri Primary School on Monday this week, about the plight of the Seiver family, whose three children attend the school over the road from their house.

On June 29th the Seiver’s house was completely burned to the ground, leaving the family of 5 with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They had no insurance as Brian was bedridden and on constant medication – they simply couldn’t afford it.

For six weeks, this family of 5 had been living in a garden shed, showering outside in freezing temperatures.

David and Tanya have told radioinfo:

“Within minutes of this conversation going to air, literally hundreds of generous listeners were phoning through with donations ranging from whitegoods to clothes and even food. People were leaving their gifts at KO FM’s reception and we were running out of space – fast!”

By Wednesday David & Tanya had arranged an OB of their top-rating breakfast show from the Kurri Kurri Primary school in front of 740 students, parents and all the teachers. Special guests included the Mayor of Cessnock, the Fire Brigade who were called to the scene of the fire in June and numerous other people who just called by with more gifts and donations.

Even a local butcher donated $1,000 worth of meat and three Woolworths stores combined to give $1500 worth of vouchers.

Collins says the plight of this family touched the hearts and minds of the Hunter: “The real icing on the cake came when they were given a two-bedroom house within walking distance from the school to live in! Those days had thankfully come to an end.”

This entire ‘Rescue’ was born, raised and completed within 48 hours, demonstrating the incredible power of radio and community spirit.
