Fairfax Radio to broadcast Phillip Hughes funeral

When Fairfax Radio signed up for the rights to brodcast cricket, they didn’t expect to be covering a funeral.

Such is the magnitude of the tragedy of a young man’s death from an unforseeable accident while playing the game he loved.

2UE and the entire Fairfax Radio Network will be broadcasting the funeral service for Phillip Hughes this afternoon (Wednesday Dec 3) from 1:30pm until 3:30pm.

2UE Drive presenter Justin Smith will host the national program with Tim Lane from the SCG.

Smith (left) and Lane will broadcast from the SCG, providing information throughout the service, which will be broadcast for the general public. The national radio broadcast will feature on Sydney’s 2UE, Melbourne’s 3AW, Brisbane’s 4BC and Perth’s 6PR, as well as Adelaide’s 5AA.

Fairfax Radio Network cricket commentators Bruce Eva and Dean Jones will attend the funeral on the network’s behalf. 4BC Breakfast co-host Ian Skippen will also attend the funeral, along with Fairfax Radio Network reporters.

A number of regional radio stations will also syndicate the Fairfax Radio Network national broadcast in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory (full list below).

“As the official cricket radio broadcaster, Fairfax Radio Network is committed to providing our listeners far and wide with the most comprehensive broadcast of Phillip Hughes’s funeral. The whole nation is mourning the loss of this talented young cricketer and our listeners want to pay their respects by being part of his funeral in some way,”  Justin Smith said.
