Happy to be local but we’ve got to cover that salary: Rebel FM’s Cheryl Jowitt

Cheryl Jowitt has taken issue with Rhys Holleran’s comments about localism.

While supporting localism, the Director & Network GM of Rebel FM makes the point that the luxury of localism has to pay off, telling radioinfo:

Your immutable rule still applies if you do the cost analysis and ROI is 3:1.

If you have a small market and his small markets are less than 20,000 not less than 5000 population.

If you take into account the Human Resources of implementing that local content on the ground in each market you will never get a return on your investment.

Face value I am sure that everything sounds great, but you need to be realistic, get your programming team to come up with local content that is not HR or Time consuming.

At present we are working on a Chinchilla News relationship that allows on air promotion of local news stories, but we need to do a cost analysis.  I am happy to put a staff member on to do localism, local stories etc, but we need to cover that salary.

If you are going to pay someone $75K pa, you need to come up with the revenue stream.  Would you get that amount plus more from Stanthorpe, Tenterfield, Chinchilla, Goondiwindi and Bundaberg?
