B105 Breakfast co-host Abby Coleman is getting brutally honest about one of the most taboo topics in the workplace: How much women get paid.
In Episode 3 of her limited podcast series Things I Wish I Knew Earlier … with Abby Coleman, Abby reveals the moment she discovered she was being paid three and a half times less than a male colleague doing the same job.

Abby says “I was so angry, upset, resentful – everything. Because I was like, Oh my god … it is because I’m the female and he’s getting paid more … you just get the resentment building up for it.”
“The hard truth about it is that they don’t wanna pay you more, and that’s so hard to hear, but you forget that. You forget it’s a business, and if you go in and ask for it and you say no, you think that’s how much you’re worth and the biggest thing is what you’re offered or sometimes given is really not what you are worth.”
Abby also reveals she didn’t ask for any more money at that time.
“And they were like, ‘No-one’s going to give you something you don’t ask for.’ And I was like, well, that’s not fair.”
“One time I got told ‘I don’t think you should complain because you get paid okay for a girl.’ And I was in a room and I said ‘I’m going to have to finish here because I feel so hurt by that comment and I got up and left and of course, you know, I got in the car and I called my mum and I burst into tears and her response being – the only thing that she had – was ‘Oh, that always has happened to me as well.’”
“I had to go back in and talk to him, I said I actually feel really upset by those comments and the fact that you’ve got daughters is really disappointing.”
“He goes ‘I really didn’t mean it like that, it came out and I felt sick after.’”
Now, Abby wants other women to learn from her experiences and not shy away from having the tough money conversations.
